The season of movies under the stars has arrived, with its pleasant slate of family-friendly classics and cartoons. This Friday, however, brings an unruly exception to the usual fare. Screening at the Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg is a Brooklyn cult favorite, Hunter & Game, a faux documentary about an electronic-music duo trying to make it in the borough’s DIY music business. As the screening’s sponsors put it, “this scathing comedy is both a brilliant parody and a love letter to the Williamsburg electronic music scene.”
Written and directed by Park Slope native Kevin Alexander, the movie features real Brooklyn performers and venues, including some of the last video shot at the legendary, now-defunct club 285 Kent. The movie premiered at the LA Indie Film Fest in 2014, where it won the award for best feature; it picked up the same honor at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival in 2015. While the movie never got into theatrical release, it has become a top video on the no-fee service Brooklyn on Demand, racking up more than 30,000 views.
The movie’s two stars have gone on to high-profile TV gigs: Nico Tortorella on Younger and Cameron Scoggins on Shades of Blue and Nashville. The movie will be screened at 8 p.m. Friday, sponsored by the NYC parks department and the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival. Admission is free, but space is first-come, first-served.
